WebHere Saint Thomas College was opened in 1807. He resigned as superior in 1814 to do missionary work in Ohio. In 1818 he built Saint Joseph's, near Somerset, the first church in Ohio, with a Dominican convent nearby. Named Bishop of Cincinnati, 1821, he was consecrated, January 13, 1822, at Saint Rose's, by Bishop Flaget. WebSt. Joseph College was established in 1819 under the auspices of Benedict Joseph Flaget, the first bishop of Bardstown and one of Kentucky’s largest slaveholders. The college relied on enslaved labor over the course of its history.
